Valkenburg aan de Geul is a municipality in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg. It has 16,475 inhabitants (January 1, 2019, source: CBS). Valkenburg aan de Geul was established during the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1982. On that date, the previously independent municipalities of Valkenburg-Houthem and Berg en Terblijt were merged. On that day, a number of border changes also took place with the neighboring municipalities of Wijlre, Hulsberg (both also abolished), and Margraten. Valkenburg aan de Geul is the most important tourist attraction in the region, with 1.2 million overnight stays per year and a multitude of day-trippers.
