The municipality of Almelo covers an area of 69 km² and has 72,376 inhabitants (April 1, 2016, source: CBS). Besides the city of Almelo, the municipality includes the villages of Aadorp, Bornerbroek, and part of Mariaparochie. The history makes Almelo a city of contrasts. From the lively center, visitors can walk within five minutes to the ancient greenery surrounding the castle of Count van Rechteren Limpurg. The tranquility of the rural area, with beautiful vistas and farmlands, alongside the liveliness of the city, characterized by the presence of water (the extended canal and the Almelose Aa), industrial monuments, and modern architecture. The municipal organization consists of five sectors divided into teams with specific expertise such as civil affairs, environment, safety, social affairs, and traffic. The approximately 650 employees work together for the city and society. They make policy for the operational work. They also support residents who need it, for example in the areas of care, participation, or work.
