Fargo Glass and Paint Company Founder E.J. Schonberg was fond of calling his company “The Friendly House.” The son of Swedish immigrants, Schonberg founded the Fargo Plate Glass Company in 1917 with $10,000 of borrowed money and absolutely no experience in the glass business. The brand new company announced itself to Fargo in an advertisement placed in the Fargo Forum on February 5, 1917. The ad explained, “We know we’ll never get any more than we earn or deserve, and we expect to hustle for all we get!” In 1919, the company changed its name to Fargo Glass Company, and in 1922, the name was changed once again – this time to the company’s current name: Fargo Glass and Paint Company (FGP). Still showing the “hustle” from 1917, today we are a distributor of floor covering, windows, doors, siding, mirrors, paint, and related accessories. Plus our commercial divisions, Contract Glazing and Hollow Metal Hardware, offer customers the experience, products, and personnel to install everything from high-rise curtain walls, storefronts and automatic doors to fabrication and supply of hollow metal doorframes, doors and hardware. With the notion that a company should be based on integrity, intelligence, and imagination, Schonberg’s “Friendly House” has grown into the largest business of its kind to be found between Minneapolis and Seattle. If E.J. Schonberg were alive today, he wouldn’t be surprised by the size or the success of his company. No doubt he’d be pleased his “Friendly House” tradition continues to this day. Still headquartered in Fargo, ND, the company has a Millwork branch in Sioux Falls, SD and Contract Glazing branches in Bismarck and Minot, ND and Sioux Falls, SD to better serve customers in those areas. Fargo Glass and Paint Company has grown and changed to keep pace with customer demands. New materials, new products, and new techniques are being introduced at a rapid rate. Some things haven’t changed, however. Things like long-term business relationships with some of the most trusted names in their respective industries. For example, FGP has been a Congoleum distributor since 1922 – making us the oldest Congoleum distributor in the United States. And we’ve been a Benjamin Moore paint distributor since 1917! More recently, we’ve been a regional Andersen Window distributor since 1987. With a staff of around 200, we continue to be dedicated to service. By operating our own fleet of trucks, our delivery is reliable and efficient. Our ongoing training programs help our customers become more knowledgeable about products they are using or selling to the consumer. We’re here to help!
