Gemeinsam was bewegen! The EWS Elektrizitätswerke Schönau eG (EWS) emerged from a citizens' initiative after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Since then, they have been committed to a sustainable, ecological energy transition and the democratization of the energy industry. After EWS were able to take over their local electricity grid in 1997 following two referendums, they emerged as one of the first nationwide eco-electricity providers after the electricity market liberalization. In 2009, the founding company Netzkauf GbR was converted into a cooperative. Today, EWS is the largest energy cooperative in Baden-Württemberg with over 7,500 members and supplies over 200,000 households and businesses nationwide with ecological energy, operates electricity and gas grids, and builds renewable energy plants.
