Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH - ELE for short - supplies around 240,000 private and commercial customers and approximately 1,200 business customers in the three "ELE cities" of Gelsenkirchen, Bottrop, and Gladbeck with electricity, natural gas, heat, and energy services. Majority-owned by RWE Deutschland AG and with significant participation from the three municipalities, ELE has become an established local player in the Emscher-Lippe region since its founding in 1999. In addition, the number of business customers in northern Lower Saxony is growing, so that a first sales office outside the core area was opened in Aurich in mid-2011. As part of the legally required separation of the sales and network business areas, ELE transferred responsibility for the electricity and gas networks in the Emscher-Lippe region to an independent subsidiary in 2006. As an independent network operator, ELE Verteilnetz GmbH, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of ELE, has since been responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and operation of more than 4,000 kilometers of medium and low-voltage networks and over 1,500 kilometers of gas pipelines. To maintain energy supply and monitor the supply networks, employees are active around the clock: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In total, ELE and ELE Verteilnetz offer jobs to almost 700 employees. In addition, young trainees start their apprenticeships at the company every year.
