The Customs oversees the import, export, and transit of goods. For example, in the port of Rotterdam and at Schiphol Airport. Customs checks whether the goods comply with requirements in the areas of safety, health, economy, and the environment. Customs also levies and collects import duties and excise duties. The Dutch Customs (Customs Administration of The Netherlands) is best known for checking passenger luggage at Schiphol. But the more than 6,000 Customs employees do much more than just physical checks.
