The Armed Forces' most important task is to create security for Norway and safety for the population. As part of NATO, we need a modern and strong defense. This deters others from threatening or attacking Norway. The Armed Forces shall secure Norway's sovereignty, our rights, and preserve Norwegian freedom of action against military and other pressure. As part of NATO, the Armed Forces shall be strong enough to protect Norway and our allies against serious threats and attacks. CREDIBLE COMBAT POWER Norway has a well-equipped army with skilled and experienced soldiers, and we have a nationwide and modernized home guard. The Navy has submarines and new and operational frigates that regularly go on long voyages. The Air Force is on standby 24 hours a day to guard Norwegian airspace. Norway has world-class special forces that are an in-demand capability within NATO. The Cyber ​​Defense protects the Armed Forces' infrastructure, and the Intelligence Service helps provide the Armed Forces with a complete picture of what is happening. All of this gives the Armed Forces the ability to respond to threats in a modern conflict. MODERNIZATION But for the Armed Forces to be credible, we must be at the forefront of technological development. NATO membership also obliges Norway to have a defense strong enough to defend ourselves until allied reinforcements arrive. Therefore, modernization is important, and the Armed Forces focus on quality. This is how we reach a level that deters potential enemies from attacking or threatening Norway. Our new F-35 fighter jets will ensure that Norway controls its own airspace and can assist NATO with very demanding air operations. The fighter jet can attack targets in the air and at sea, and they can conduct electronic warfare and operate almost undetected.
