Founded in 1963, Cortel began its activities by carrying out various earthmoving and urbanization works. In the 70s, Cortel was invited to collaborate in solving a serious problem of the time: the construction and administration of cemeteries. It accepted the challenge and with much planning and research, entered this field, developing its own technology and unprecedented solutions, often superior to international counterparts. The result of this pioneering system was the first reinforced concrete vertical cemetery in Brazil, Ecumênico João XXIII, in Porto Alegre/RS. Still in the 70s, Cemitério Parque Jardim São Vicente, in Canoas, and Cemitério Ecumênico São Francisco de Paula, in Pelotas, were delivered and are today references in their communities. In 1977 Cortel created Previr - Serviço Nacional de Assistência Familiar – a company dedicated to the sale of funeral plans with advance sales and high-standard service, becoming a national reference in the segment. In the 80s, the company made another qualified venture available to the population: the Memorial Ecumênico Cristo Rei, in São Leopoldo/RS. In 1997, at the same venture, it launched the first crematorium in southern Brazil, the Crematório Metropolitano Cristo Rei. At the end of the decade, in 1999, the company also launched Cemitério Parque Memorial da Colina in Cachoeirinha/RS.
