Located in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, in the Charente-Maritime department, the Ile de Ré is connected to the city of La Rochelle by a 3 km long bridge. The island territory includes ten communes: Ars-en-Ré, le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, la Couarde-sur-Mer, La Flotte, Loix, Les Portes-en-Ré, Rivedoux-Plage, Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, and Sainte-Marie-de-Ré. With a surface area of approximately 85 km², the territory has 18,000 permanent inhabitants. The ten communes of the territory have been grouped within the Communauté de Communes de l’Ile de Ré since 1993. Over the years, the Public Territorial Cooperation Establishment (EPCI) has benefited from a large number of competence transfers in many areas. With the territorial reform, pooling and competence transfers are expected to increase further for the intercommunal structure in the coming years. Today, the Communauté de Communes de l’Ile de Ré is responsible for skills as varied as spatial planning, economic development, environmental protection and enhancement, housing and living environment policy, the construction, maintenance and operation of cultural and sports facilities, actions in favor of the sports, social, cultural and heritage sectors, early childhood, development of cycle paths, processing of urban planning authorizations, or tourism, for which it chose to delegate this competence by creating a Public Limited Company (SPL), “Destination Ile de Ré” in 2016.
