Cocal is a 100% national company, founded in 1980 in the city of Paraguaçu Paulista/SP, by Carlos Arruda Garms, with the implementation of Proálcool. Activities began with a focus on ethanol production for regional supply, providing more than 55 thousand m3 of ethanol/year in 1983. In 1994 it also started producing sugar and, in 2002, added electricity generation to its operations with the start of its Thermoelectric Plant. With business growth, in 2008 the need arose to expand its sugarcane processing to the municipality of Narandiba/SP, where Cocal installed its second unit, with an initial capacity of 2.5 million tons of sugarcane/year, but projected to process 6 million tons by 2015. Between 2020 and 2021, it implemented a new industrial plant in Narandiba/SP for biogas production, from the noble destination of sugarcane waste: filter cake, vinasse, and straw, which will be used for electricity and biomethane production. More recently, dry yeast has been used for animal feed production. Currently, Cocal is one of the most important companies in the agro-energy sector, where it has operated for over four decades, producing sugarcane, sugar, ethanol, electricity, yeast, and biogas.
