Andover, KS is an upscale, young community with a median resident age of 33.7. It is highly educated, with 96.1% high school graduates and a very high median household income of $81,175 when compared to surrounding communities and the state. The community has experienced tremendous growth, almost doubling in size over the previous 10 years, from a population of 6,698 in 2000 to 11,791 in 2010. With this growth, the most recent census reflects a slight increase in minority representation up to about seven percent of the population. The Andover Police Department realizes that as the City continues to grow, so too will the number of minorities that are served by our department. Therefore, the APD realizes that it too must change and has committed to the task of diversifying the agency staff to mirror the community in which it serves. As such, in 2012 the APD voluntarily developed and committed to utilizing a recruitment plan in their efforts to attract a more diverse body of applicants from which to choose new officers.
