The Caisse d'Épargne Group was, until July 2009, a French banking group made up of the 17 French Savings Banks. This group merged with the Banques Populaires group, an operation finalized on July 31, 2009. The new entity, named Groupe BPCE, became the second-largest French banking group. Within Groupe BPCE, the two commercial brands, Caisse d'Épargne and Banque populaire, continue to exist. The French Savings Banks are sometimes referred to by the name L'Ecureuil (The Squirrel), after the animal that serves as the logo for the 17 Savings Banks. The first Savings Bank was created in 1818 in Paris.
