The BVK, with over 142,000 insured individuals, is the largest pension fund in Switzerland. It is a private law foundation. 60% of clients are from affiliated employers in the healthcare, education, and administration sectors. The remaining 40% are employees of the Canton of Zurich. The BVK performs very well in terms of benefits for age, disability, and death for active insured members and pension recipients when compared across the board. Contributions are designed to be very employee-friendly, with an employer share of 60%. Employees can also choose between three different contribution options. Furthermore, unlike other pension funds, the BVK also insures against occupational disability. Thanks to its advantageous client base, the BVK has a very good insured structure with a comparatively high proportion of actively insured members. The advantageous client structure is reflected in extremely low costs for asset and member administration. The BVK also possesses a large portfolio of directly held properties and rents out approximately 6,000 apartments and 350,000 m2 of office and commercial space. The BVK also utilizes its real estate expertise for issuing mortgages.
