The AWO gemeinnützige Gesellschaft für soziale Einrichtungen und Dienste in Nordhessen mbH, a subsidiary of the AWO Bezirksverbandes Hessen-Nord e. V., primarily operates facilities and services for the elderly. Over 2200 employees care for, advise, and support elderly and needy people at more than 30 locations in North and East Hesse: in nursing homes, in home care, in assisted living communities, in assisted living facilities, with day and short-term care services, and with telephone-based care advice. They assist with daily tasks, provide support when abilities are limited, and ensure independence when life is impaired by illness and age. The volunteer agencies attached to the senior centers recruit, place, and support volunteers who wish to get involved in elderly care. In six nursing schools, around 340 students are trained annually as state-recognized geriatric nurses, state-recognized geriatric nursing assistants, or elderly caregivers. In child and youth welfare, AWO Nordhessen is involved with four daycare centers and two youth welfare facilities, as well as outpatient youth welfare measures.
