The Assistenzgenossenschaft Bremen gemeinnützige eG is an association of people with disabilities with high support needs who organize their assistance, meaning the help they need in daily life, through the cooperative. It has been in existence for 32 years. The organization's goal is to enable people with disabilities who rely on help to live a self-determined life in their own homes. The Assistenzgenossenschaft is a recognized nursing service that also organizes assistance for people with disabilities in Bremen-North. People with disabilities should have the say at all levels of the Assistenzgenossenschaft. The board itself also has a disability. Personal assistance differs from classic nursing in that the assistance recipients themselves direct the support and can decide when and where the support should be provided, how it should be performed, and who performs it. This allows those affected to have complete control over their daily lives. Personal assistance includes, for example, basic care, household help, and leisure companionship, as well as assistance at the workplace or university, all organized from a single source. The founding members with disabilities of the Assistenzgenossenschaft Bremen chose the cooperative form so that people with physical impairments can have a say at all levels. With the cooperative solution, the Assistenzgenossenschaft Bremen was a pioneer in Germany. This model has been imitated in several large cities such as Hamburg and Vienna. Currently, the Assistenzgenossenschaft Bremen organizes 'Personal Assistance' for approximately 70 assistance recipients with nearly 400 employees.
