Alternatives For Girls helps homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation, and helps them to explore and access the support, resources and opportunities necessary to be safe, to grow strong and to make positive choices in their lives. Alternatives For Girls (AFG) helps at-risk girls and young women in Detroit through three programs: AFG's Prevention Program works with girls and young women ages 5-18 who are at risk. AFG Prevention offers after-school and summer programming, mentoring, service learning projects, leadership development, field trips, relationship building with youth and parents, family programming and much more. AFG's Shelter provides a safe, stable living and learning environment for homeless young women aged 15-21 24 hours a day. Trained staff assist residents through a structured Transition to Independent Living Program designed to help young women complete their education and acquire the housing, job, parenting and life skills necessary to lead productive, independent lives. AFG's Outreach and Education Services helps teens and young women understand the risks of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. It also helps girls and young women engaged in high-risk activities, such as running away, school truancy, prostitution and substance abuse, transition to safe choices and independent lives.
