Albert entered the Czech market in 1990 as Euronova, a.s., and in 1991 opened its first Mana supermarket in Jihlava, which was historically the very first supermarket in the Czech Republic. By 1999, it was operating Hypernova hypermarkets and supermarkets, which were renamed Albert. In 2005, Albert strengthened its position in the Czech market by taking over 57 Julius Meinl stores. To present the company uniformly, in 2009 the brand was unified under Albert supermarket and Albert hypermarket. On August 1, 2014, an acquisition was closed where the Albert retail chain took over SPAR ČOS. This move made it one of the leaders in the retail market in the Czech Republic. In 2016, Albert merged with Delhaize Group. Ahold Delhaize operates on three continents, running 22 established, trusted brands that serve over 50 million customers every week in 11 countries worldwide. Currently, Albert Česká republika, s.r.o. employs more than 17,500 employees, ranking it among the largest employers in the country. It operates Albert stores throughout the Czech Republic. In line with its strategy, the Albert chain strongly focuses on the quality and freshness of food and on cooperation with regional suppliers. Customers are also offered a wide range of products under its own brands. In 2015, Ahold received the National Quality Award for the third time. In January 2016, the company ranked among the top performers in the TOP Employers ranking published by the Association of Students and Graduates for the second time, taking second place overall and first place among broad-based food retailers. The company's charitable activities are covered by the Albert Foundation, which has distributed over 65 million Czech crowns since 2009 to projects supporting the social sphere and healthy lifestyles. The Albert Foundation currently manages, for example, the unique Healthy 5 project focused on healthy eating for children.
