Girona is the capital of the demarcation and the region of Gironès, located in northeastern Catalonia. The municipality is 100 km from Barcelona, 40 km from the Costa Brava, and 60 km from the French border. Girona stands out for its commerce, gastronomy, industry, R&D, and a historical and cultural heritage unique in Europe. A crossroads between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, Girona is also an important convention and festival center in Catalonia. The current mayor is Marta Madrenas i Mir (CiU), elected on March 18, 2016, to replace Carles Puigdemont i Casamajó (CiU), mayor elected in the 2011 municipal elections and re-elected in 2015, who resigned the mayorship to be invested as the 130th president of the Generalitat of Catalonia. She is the fifth mayor of the democratic era, a position previously held by Joaquim Nadal (PSC-PSOE), Anna Pagans (PSC), Carles Puigdemont (CiU), and Albert Ballesta (CiU). Currently, six political forces are represented: CiU (10), ERC (4), CUP (4), PSC (4) C'S (2), and PP (1). The government is formed by a coalition of parties: CDC, Demòcrates, Reagrupament, Avancem, PSC, and independents. Among the city's main offerings are "Girona 10," an initiative by the hospitality sector with hotels and restaurants at €10, offering a taste of everything that happens throughout the year. Also notable is "Girona Temps de Flors," an event that has transcended borders and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The "Fires de Sant Narcís" are an icon of the region, recognized with awards such as the ARC Award for the best municipal festival music programming in Catalonia in 2014. Music, with the Auditori de Girona (also awarded at the ARC awards for its programming), and especially the brand "Girona Ciutat de Festivals" (Girona City of Festivals), which brings together 21 festivals throughout the year, such as Temporada Alta or the Girona International Mapping Festival, have positioned the city as a cultural capital of Catalonia.
