Public institution, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) has been working for seventy years to combat poverty and promote development in Southern countries and overseas territories. It implements the policy defined by the French Government. Present on four continents where it has a network of 70 agencies and representative offices worldwide, including 9 in overseas territories and 1 in Brussels, AFD finances and supports projects that improve people's living conditions, support economic growth, and protect the planet: schooling, maternal health, support for farmers and small businesses, water supply, rainforest preservation, the fight against climate change... In 2012, AFD devoted more than 6.9 billion euros to financing actions in developing countries and for overseas territories. These will contribute in particular to the schooling of 10 million children at primary level and 3 million at middle school level, and to improving the supply of drinking water for 1.79 million people. Energy efficiency projects in the same year will save nearly 3.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
