The Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre of Winnipeg, Inc. (AHWC) represents a unique alternative in support of health and well-being. This uniqueness stems from its contemporary use of the philosophy and elements of the Medicine Wheel, and its efforts to provide a balance and a continuum of supports that bring this philosophy to life. With an understanding of the role and use of the Medicine Wheel, it is evident that the approaches that are needed to give action to the concepts can differ significantly from traditional western medical practice. It is considerably more non-interventionist. It is supportive, more long term, rather than immediate. It seeks to enable and build the capacity of those involved with it, to resolve issues, and bring about greater balance – equated to healthier situations. Within the AHWC, support persons who work within these approaches are needed within several disciplines; traditional practitioners (Elders, Healers and Spiritualists), medical, nursing and social work practitioners, and community health workers. A true continuum of care must be developed and maintained to support these efforts. Given the expectations established for it, the overall role of the AHWC can be described in terms of the actions to assist in bringing opportunities for a healthier situation through various approaches and supports. In this manner, the AHWC is expected to be an agent of change, bringing about opportunities for change in accordance with the principles of the Medicine Wheel, and by utilizing both traditional and western healing practices.
