The Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellite Technology was established in December 2003. It is a non-profit public institution co-established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Shanghai Municipal Government. Its predecessor was the Small Satellite Engineering Department of CAS, formed in March 1999 by the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, the Shanghai Aerospace Systems Engineering Institute, and Shanghai Telecom. In July 2014, CAS launched the "Pioneering Action" plan and reform by classification, and the Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellite Technology became one of the first five pilot innovation research institutes within the academy. In October of the same year, after the approval of the CAS Party Group, the Innovation Research Institute of Microsatellite Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences was established. On August 22, 2017, the Chinese Academy of Sciences officially issued a document establishing the Innovation Research Institute of Microsatellite Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. On September 26 of the same year, the Innovation Research Institute of Microsatellite Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences was officially unveiled. The Innovation Research Institute of Microsatellite Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences has more than 600 scientific research and management personnel, with over 80% holding a master's degree or above, an average age of 31, and half of the employees have complete model development experience. It has over 27,000 square meters of workspace, including a mass properties test area, a mechanics test area, a space environment test area, and a satellite final assembly workshop, equipped with various modern test equipment, capable of developing various types of satellites including communications, remote sensing, navigation, micro-nano, and scientific experiments. As one of the overall units in the field of microsatellites and related technologies in China, the Innovation Research Institute has successfully launched 43 satellites, including the new generation Beidou navigation satellites, the dark matter particle detector satellite, the quantum science experimental satellite, and the Tiangong-2 companion satellite, with a success rate of 100%. It has become the main force in China's scientific satellite field and a flank force in military and civilian satellite fields. The Innovation Research Institute of Microsatellite Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences adheres to the "three orientations" and has established a New Technology Research Center oriented towards the world's scientific and technological frontiers; three overall departments oriented towards major national needs: Communication Satellites, Remote Sensing Satellites, and Scientific Satellites, and four research institutes for Satellite Electronic Technology, Satellite Control Technology, Satellite Thermo-physical Technology, and Satellite Software Technology; a Navigation Satellite Research Institute and a Micro-nano Satellite Research Institute oriented towards the main battlefield of the national economy; and three support centers: Reliability Center, Software Testing Center, and AIT Center. The Innovation Research Institute of Microsatellite Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences is committed to becoming an innovation engine for China's advanced satellite science and technology, a demonstration base for the transformation and industrialization of aerospace scientific and technological achievements, a bridge and link for the close integration of government, academia, research, industry, and application, and an open platform for international exchange and cooperation, providing strong support for national strategic needs and major scientific breakthroughs.
